Farting gorillas that sing while they eat, and other weird ways animals communicate on Odds and Sods this week.
This month: weird ways animals communicate. While folks in the US where I live have been talking turkey all week, we’ll look into some weird ways animals communicate, including a bug that sings with his penis, rhinos sending scent signals through their poop, gorillas that sing for their supper and literally fart around all day, baboons that make vowel sounds, and prairie dogs who can tell each other what color shirt you’re wearing. There’re also ultrasonic primates, infrasonic elephants, squids that can say 2 different things to 2 different other squids at once, and birds that can stare you down. I’ve brought together a few videos from Youtube that don’t include any actual sounds, so I found some sounds on Youtube, Freesound and the BBC sound library and edited them in. Enjoy the show.
Go to
and Tune in tomorrow at 17:30 UTC. That’s 6:30 PM in Central Europe, 12:30 PM Eastern, 9:30 AM Pacific.
If you miss the airing, check the schedule for repeats or listen in archives on the website.
